Sticky Situations:

This is the autobiographical tale of an amazing childhood. The author's father was a CIA agent who brought his family
along when he was posted to a variety of overseas locations, including Europe and South East Asia. This collection of
memories reflects a child's view of an interesting and challenging life in circumstances well beyond the experiences of
most of today's children.

Ms. Rogers displays remarkable resilience, and does not dwell on negatives or hardships. She always manages to
locate an up side to a situation. This optimism and joy of life is infectious and one is drawn into the narrative to find
out what happens next. Her descriptions of life in Vienna, Austria in the mid 1960s in the peak of the cold war are
particularly fascinating. The cultural differences, the language and the courage of a child heading off to school in a
new and unfamiliar country are mind opening.

However, don't expect a travelogue; one is pointed towards the normal experiences of family, and there are stories of
big sisters and little sisters, laughter and pain, an older child caring and taking charge of her younger twin sisters who
are a constant source of irritation, laughter and fun. Who would have imagined that horse ownership would have been
synonymous with a family's tour of duty in Vientiane, Laos? Leigh's energy and love of her horse and the tales of
day-to-day horse experiences are hysterical. Anyone who has ridden will relate to some of these mishaps and admire
Leigh's persistence and tolerance for pain.

My 13-year-old son was intrigued by this book and has been pestering me for weeks to read it. It is interesting and I
know that he will enjoy the short sharp chapters and benefit from the exposure to different countries and life's
circumstances.

Recommended as excellent and interesting reading.

Dear Leigh,

Good luck with your book!  Here is a review:

"I ran this book past two harsh critics.  My twelve year old described it as, 'Great and funny,' my nine year old said, 'Fascinating and funny.'
They both read it right through, stopping only for vital bodily functions."

Best,
Tracey
